A little bit

about me

I am a Statistician with over 25 years of experience working in academia as an educator, collaborator, and researcher. I hold the M.S. and Ph.D. in Statistics. At the undergraduate level I majored in Mathematics and Computer Information Systems.

In addition to working in academia, I have worked in various industries as a biostatistician, database designer/developer, and applications programmer.

I am a certified SCUBA diver with a NAUI Master rating, the highest non-commercial SCUBA rating. I am also a private pilot.

I am an amateur astronomer, and love all things scientific: outer space, inner space; land, air, and sea; empirical, theoretical; mathematical, statistical.

Lastly, but foremost, because it is most fundamental, I am a believer in God and a follower of Christ. My belief in God and my faith in the Messiah both motivates and informs my pursuit of knowledge about His creation, for the betterment of mankind and, ultimately, for His Glory.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates estimation and prediction for the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution using type-II censored samples.

A procedure for computing the maximum-likelihood estimators of the parameters is given. The small-sample properties of the maximum-likelihood parameter estimators are investigated using Monte-Carlo simulation. The maximum-likelihood estimators are shown to be asymptotically normally distributed and asymptotically correlated when computed from type-II censored samples.

In proving asymptotic normality a new class of functions is introduced that has several interesting properties. Every density in this class is shown to have positive and negative moments of all orders, as well as a moment-generating function. Both the Birnbaum-Saunders density and the inverse Gaussian density are shown to be in this class.

Several procedures for constructing confidence interval estimates of the parameters are investigated and compared. Regression-based calibration is used to improve the coverage performance of some of the confidence interval procedures.

The maximum-likelihood estimator of a population quantile is computed using type-II censored samples. The distributional properties of the maximum-likelihood quantile estimator are investigated. Several procedures for constructing confidence interval estimates of a population quantile are investigated and compared.

Procedures for constructing prediction intervals for within-sample future failure times are investigated and compared. One of the procedures is based on the limiting distribution of the largest order statistic, which is derived in this dissertation.

The appropriateness of basing inference for the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution on the inverse Gaussian distribution, and also of approximating the inverse Gaussian distribution by the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution, is assessed. The Hellinger distance is used to provide a theoretical measure of the error involved in approximating a member of one family by a member of the other family, in order to identify conditions under which such an approximation should not be used. Monte-Carlo simulation is then used to provide an empirical assessment of the reliability of inferences made using such approximations.
